Importance of Establishment

Importance of Establishment

When you write a story, as a writer you know where the story has been established, and taken place considering the time and location as well. But when you make a film you make it for the audience where indirectly you are portraying your vision on screen. As a film maker you should make sure that whatever you are shooting will be very clear especially regarding the location, and the time where the event has taken place. For the establishment in a film there is a particular term known as an 'Establishment shot' where before you go into the dialogues and story of the film as an audience it will be clear that where the story is at that particular point of time, and at which place as well. Without establishment there will be confusion created as well as giving your audience half knowledge about the character's movement, and present location or time. Sometimes film makers creates their own fictional location so the establishment part will help the audience get to know about the location, and the importance of it as well. Establishment shot itself shows the importance of that particular location or time, and the reason of the character being over there as well. When you are making a film you are also making the audience believe that whatever is happening in front of them is realistic, so establishment will also play an essential role, because as a film maker you are showing everything what you have created into your mind from the positioning of your characters to the ambiance which is present.
Establishment shot is needed for everything you have set in front of the frame, because there will never be any element without a reason. From your setting to your location, and time with your characters positions are all established for the audience to have a clear picture of what exactly is happening on screen, and hold them through the film as well.
